Over 35 residents attended The Chilkat Valley Community Foundation and Alaska Legal Services sponsored workshop last weekend at the Haines Borough Library. Heather Parker, of Alaska Legal Services, gave an in-depth presentation helping attendees to understand the importance and nuances of 3 essential life documents.
The Power of Attorney document, which enables one to dictate who has authority to handle financial matters on your behalf, generated a spirited Q&A session. The Advanced Health Care Directive document, which enables one to make clear how you want to handle health decisions if you are incapacitated, was also reviewed on a line by line basis. The presentation concluded with an overview of Wills – a document directing how you would like your possessions to be distributed upon death. Attendees left with fill in the blank copies of the first two documents, and a list of resources to help complete the third.
