Liz Heywood joined the CVCF Advisory Board in 2016 and stepped up as Co-Chair in November, 2017. We asked her to share a little about herself, and why she loves living in the Chilkat Valley.
Occupation and Hobbies: I have a BS in Geology and another in Secondary Science Education, and taught science in grades 7-12 in MN and at Adak Naval Station in the Aleutians for 12 years. I left teaching to raise three children, and also operated the bookstore in Haines for the past 19 years. We sold the bookstore in September of 2017, and I look forward to having more time for projects, hobbies (reading!), and travel.
Spouse & family members: My husband Tom taught grade school for 20 years, ran the bookstore with me, and has led the Haines Arts Council for the past 20 years. Our kids grew up in Haines and now live in Berkeley, Seattle, and Pawtucket, RI. We’ve lived in Haines for 24 years, having moved here after the Navy base at Adak was closed in 1994.
What I love about the Chilkat Valley is…the people, the beauty, and the kind of laid-back but inspiring lifestyle the valley offers. Haines is what community is all about!
One reason I’m a part of CVCF is…because the Foundation supports all nonprofit organizations in the Valley, and those organizations provide a better quality of life for all our residents. The people and organizations are what make this such a fabulous community to live in, work in, and raise a family.
